DescriptionEast Coast Surfing Hall of Fame legend Gaulden Reed spent nearly 90 years on Daytona Beach, establishing the first concession, flying seaplanes and sailing. Here Reed shares his experiences and views, both profound and humorous. He was the feature of numerous documentaries on surfing and Daytona Beach history, and he was the frequent subject of newspaper articles for political escapades. A champion fisherman, Reed was known for landing his seaplanes and fishing off the wings, as well as for fishing from his surfboard. A pioneer surfer, he spend forty winters in Hawaii, surfing with Buffalo Kealani and other legendary beach boys. Reed recalls the changes in Daytona Beach over the years, the effects of WWII, and the first ever race down the wide flat sands of the world's most famous beach, as daring young Englishmen set new speed records, and he was there as they stored their enormous racing machines into the showroom of his father's Reed Hudson Essex each year. Contributions from surfing and sailing and other friends include Frieda Zamba, Hobie Alter, Dr. James Andrew, Cecil Lear, Mimi Munro and Dick Catri. A must-read for anyone interested in surfing, history, Daytona Beach, NASCAR, or sailing (Reed was in the Americas Cup iin his 80s), Once Upon A Wave is a treasure of remembrance, vision and the joy of the journey of life.
