DescriptionBefore World War II, Dick Metz and his buddies would surf at San Onofre all time. When the war came, Camp Pendelton was built and there was little to no access to their favorite spots. Some of the guys that Dick used to surf with were in the military, so Dick and his buddies talked to them and worked out a plan with the military. The San Onofre Surfing Club was started, which only allowed 500 people per year, with $10 membership fee. Only those 500 in the club were allowed to surf the spots near Pendelton. Each year, each paid member was given a card and a decal with a number (1-500) on it for their car. After a while, others wanted to belong to the club as well, and a waiting list was created. Those with seniority were given priority membership each year, while those spots who did not re-up/reapply for membership were given to the first people on the waiting list.
