DescriptionRon Drumond was born in 1907 in Los Angeles and rode his first canoe at age 14. He wrote The Art of Wave Riding, a book on bodysurfing in 1931; some regard it as the first book written on surfing, and it is a highly sought-after collectible today. He swam, canoed, and bodysurfed into his mid-80s. He passed away in 1996 at the age of 89. This board is a solid plank, Duke Kahanamoku look-alike. It is solid redwood with a P-38 airplane painting on the bottom. It has 3 inlaid wood pieces across the nose and 1 at the tail. It does not have a fin. Duke Kahanamoku and Ron Drumond made this board like the Vultees’ at Big Corona Beach, Corona Del Mar. Ron Drumond was 6’ 8” - much taller than Duke Kahanamoku - so they used the same shape as the Vultee flying “V” which is also in our collection; however, they added 2’ 8” in length. In actuality, this means it was probably very similar to Gerald Vultee’s flying “V” (before it was cut down and reshaped by Joe Quigg in 1961).
