DescriptionThis custom made, high buoyancy surfboard was built for two. This board’s outline is essentially a stretched Simmons template, complete with scarfed on nose. Popularized in Waikiki in the 1920s, tandem surfing was one way for the “beachboys” to take tourists surfing. Tandem riding was introduced to the mainland in the 1930s and it was soon practiced by small numbers of devotees at places like San Onofre, Doheny, Corona del Mar and Malibu. It became more prominent in the 1950s and ‘60s and was also featured in prestigious surf events. Interest in tandem surfing began to die out at the end of the 1960s and was soon removed from surf contests. Coming full circle today as in the 1930s, it is again being practiced by small numbers of devotees. On View
