DescriptionIn the 1930's, E.J. Oshier helped start what has become known as the "San Onofre Bamboo Room". This music evolved from two people playing ukes on the beach occasionally to 8 to 10 musicians performing on a regular basis on that same beach 70 years later. Surfing is the first reason these people come to San Onofre. But after riding waves at "old mans", "the point", "dog patch", or "church's", several surfers put down their boards and pick up their guitars and begin strumming and singing. The music transforms that moment into a very special and unique experience, duplicated only once before at Waikiki in the first half of the previous century. This experience is irreplaceable to those who currently play and to those who listen. Here are some of the songs that have endeared and endured--and some of those men who play them. We thank E.J. for starting and maintaining this tradition, even today. On View
