DescriptionAfter graduation from Wilson High in 1938, Bob Hankey became a lifeguard for $140/month. After buying a glued up plank of balsa and redwood from Pacific Systems Homes in Los Angeles for $45, he and Lee Adams shaped this board on the beach while lifeguarding in 1939. Ted Sizemore and Hammer Head Gravage taught Bob Hankey to surf at San Onofre for the next 2 years, before they all went into service in 1941. This board has been in the family 64 years. It has a Pacific Systems Homes Waikiki plank shape; it is solid redwood, balsa and pine laminations. It has a redwood nose; tail blocks; and a wood, 3” deep fin.On View
