Hobie Alter’s company became the surf industries leader for nearly two decades after opening in the mid-1950s, selling up to 6,500 surfboards annually during its heyday in the 1960s. By 1962 Hobie Surfboards had dealerships in San Diego, Honolulu and Peru and sponsored an all-star team of surfers including Phil Edwards, Joey Cabell, Joyce Hoffman, Gary Propper, and Corky Carroll. They all had their own signature models, another Hobie innovation. Hobie Skateboards was launched in 1964 and in 1967 he introduced the Hobie Cat (or catamaran as it’s formally known).
