DescriptionHoled up in a Quonset hut at Makaha with a handful of mainlanders, Buzzy Trent became immersed in the Hawaiian lifestyle. He dove, read and rode the biggest waves he could find in his spare time. Makaha was his ultimate arena - not the bouncy shorebreak photo gallery - but 20-foot point surf. He scoffed at spinners and head-dips, preferring to sit farthest out on the gnarliest days and wait for the entire horizon to rise and greet him. Intent on iron-legging though the heaviest sections imaginable, a Makaha lip once snapped his leg like a toothpick. Buzzy Trent rode the first of Bob Simmons’ foam prototypes, and then settled into a long relationship with George Downing, whose surfing he admired as much as his shaping. Dick Brewer was considered one of the best big wave shapers on the north shore of Hawaii from 1960 to 2000. He joined with Hobie in making a special model gun in a small workshop in Haleiwa, where this board was made for team rider Buzzy Trent. It was glassed by Bosco Burns. This board has a Hobie gun shape and is made from foam. It has 2 offset clear foam T-bands, a .5" redwood stringer, and a black glassed-on fin. It is #21 of the Hobie/Brewer gun model. On View
