Description“The early boards tended to be full of air voids. Great for floatability – but not the thing for toughness. We would shine a strong light over them; crawl under the boards and look up through them, and pop the bubbles with a screwdriver. Then we would patch up the holes... with all those air voids, you can't get that splendid clear-foam effect and the boards must be painted solid colors. Most of those boards ended up with some sort of pastel coloration to hide the corrections. Pastel, because darker colors showed all of the problems. But what we ended up with was a better board. Better than balsa. Lighter and stronger. If you see an old Hobie board from that era, chances are that it has at least two inches of balsa. That’s because the blanks came out of the mold too narrow, and they needed the extra lumber to widen them out.” – Hobie AlterThis was Hobie Alter’s own board; he traded it for a bicycle.
