DescriptionMade in Hawaii soon after the turn of the century, this board is one of the few remaining solid redwood boards from this time period. This board has the classic outline associated with the ancient alaia style of surfboard which is depicted in some of the photographs of those in the Bishop Museum, Hawaii.
The wood may have been salvaged from discarded redwood hatch covers on Matson Line ships coming from San Francisco. Additionally, solid planks of redwood were also being imported from the mainland, primarily for the construction of piers, buildings, and harbors, and thus became available for surfboard construction as well.
